Community Rehabilitation with Julia Clarkin, RN (BaHSc, PGCertHSc – Advanced Nursing)

Supporting Recovery, Independence & Wellbeing — Manaaki, Whakapiki, Hauora

With over 18 years of clinical nursing experience, Julia delivers expert support in community-based rehabilitation, helping tāngata (clients) restore independence and wellbeing following injury, illness, or surgery. Her mahi is guided by manaaki (compassion), clinical skill, and a deep respect for each person's unique journey.

Currently working as a self-employed specialist Nurse, Julia provides social rehabilitation services across Te Tai Tokerau. She works closely with whānau, various health professionals, and community providers to support holistic, personalised recovery in the home environment.

Julia’s extensive background spans pre-operative assessment, emergency care, Orthopaedics, Surgical, and rural and remote nursing placements across Australia and NZ. From the Whangarei Base Hospital to remote clinics in Aurukun and Weipa, she brings a flexible, grounded, and person-focused approach to care, to support clients from all walks of life.

Raised on a farm in rural Aotearoa with strong Irish heritage, Julia combines the heart of Irish tradition — warmth, storytelling, resilience — with Kiwi common sense and critical thinking. This unique blend shapes her ability to build trust quickly, make sound clinical decisions, and genuinely connect with the people she supports.

She is passionate about integrating evidence-based nursing with prevention-focused care, and where appropriate, safe complementary therapies — always honouring the mana and needs of the individual and their whānau.

Community rehabilitation support includes:

  • Social rehabilitation assessments and planning
  • Functional support after surgery, injury, or illness
  • Medication, wound, pain, bladder, bowel, sleep, respiratory, skin, sexuality and general health management
  • Whakamārama hauora — health coaching and education
  • Collaborative care with a variety of rōpū hauora (health teams) and professionals

Outside of Work

Julia is a proud mum of two young girls and lives a lifestyle grounded in simplicity, sustainability, and connection to the land. A keen veggie and fruit grower and advocate for self-sufficiency, she finds balance in the garden, kitchen, and outdoors. Her upbringing on the land and heritage of Irish care and humour continue to shape her down-to-earth, heartfelt approach to both life and healthcare.
