Cancer Rehabilitation and BOOST Program

What is Cancer Rehabilitation?

A Cancer Rehabilitation program can reduce side effects of the disease and debilitating cancer treatments, and can improve functional ability, quality of life, psychological and emotional wellbeing, and ultimately, survival. Working with a certified cancer rehabilitation Physiotherapist and other health disciplines with expertise and training in this area can greatly improve your outcomes and recovery following a cancer diagnosis.

How Active+ can help

We provide support for people following a cancer diagnosis through PINC & STEEL cancer rehabilitation programmes, the BOOST program, lymphoedema treatment, and group exercise sessions.

If people don't undergo rehabilitation following a cancer diagnosis it can affect their ability to work, their relationships, their physical, emotional and social wellbeing, and their long-term health.

The PINC and STEEL programmes provide individualised, prescribed physiotherapy rehabilitation to women and men diagnosed with cancer; helping them heal as well as possible, and function at optimal levels through every stage of their cancer treatment and recovery. They are delivered by our certified Cancer Rehab Physiotherapists, and are specifically designed to help maximise recovery, regain physical and emotional strength, and improve body confidence and control.

We have a large number of PINC & STEEL trained physiotherapists throughout our clinic network - contact your local clinic to see who is available.

What is the BOOST program?

BOOST is a collaboration between Active+ and PINC & STEEL. It is a service that can be funded privately, or through some insurance companies, depending on your provider and policy. This program takes a holistic approach to cancer rehabilitation to cover all aspects of returning you to your normal life activities.
The individual meets with an accredited cancer rehabilitation physiotherapist who completes an initial assessment and considers the individual’s physical and psychosocial functioning using validated tools. Together, the individual and physiotherapist develop a Care Plan including services that will help ‘boost’ the customer’s recovery. A number of other professionals may be involved in your care, including an occupational therapist, psychologist, dietitian, and career counsellor/vocational consultant

Services in the cancer recovery toolkit include:

  • Tailored exercise rehabilitation
  • Physiotherapy
  • Psychological support
  • Nutrition advice
  • Pain management
  • Fatigue management
  • Return to work support including career counselling and services if your previous employment is not available
  • Community-based social support

Speak to your insurance company to see whether this is something they are a part of and can refer you into. Referrals can be made online by your insurace company case manager here.

Additional services

As well as the individual cancer rehabilitation programmes, in some areas we also offer PaddleOn stand up paddle boarding rehab classes, and Next Steps circuit fitness classes. We also have qualified Lymphedema Therapists, who help to control this problem through exercises, lymphedema massage, compressing garments, and specialised wrapping and taping of the affected body part.

These services can be privately funded, or depending on individual circumstances, may be able to be funded through the PINC and STEEL Cancer Rehab Trust, or through private medical insurance.
